Chlorite. (After Beutelspacher and van der Mare11968)
Chlorophyceae class of the green algae or Chlorophyta. Most species live in freshwater or in soil. Few species are marine and then mostly belong to the order
of the Dunaliellales. The unicellular alga ChIarella is economically important
as health food, especially in Japan. The marine alga Dunaliella contains glycerol.
chlorophyll (leaf-green) a complex of pigments causing the green color of plants
and giving them the ability to assimilate CO 2 from the air (or water).
Chlorophyll is situated in chloroplasts (~chromatophore) in the protoplasm.
The pigment has its strongest light absorption in the red and blue-violet
(hence its color). In the presence of the enzyme system related with chlorophyll, part of the absorbed light energy is stored as potential energy, i.e., the
first step in photosynthesis of carbohydrates from CO 2 , Chlorophyll-a occurs in
all photosynthetic eukaryotes and in the prokaryotic Cyanobacteria, measurement of its concentration in seawater is therefore widely used to estimate
phytoplankton biomass in the sea. Chlorophyll-b and-c are accessory pigments broadening the spectrum of light absorption by plants, but they do
