deep-sea basins, monsoonal influences on the pelagic system of the Banda
Sea, coral reefs, and inputs of some Indonesian rivers to the ocean. The
Dutch Tyro was assisted by five smaller Indonesian research vessels. The
first results were published in 1988-1990 in five volumes of the Netherlands
Journal of Sea Research.
Snell's law originally formulated for refraction of light by the Dutch mathematician W. Snell or "Snellius" (1581-1626). This law gives the change of direction
of any sort of propagating wave due to differences in wave velocity.
sodium chloride (common salt, NaCl), the main constituent of the dissolved,
inorganic salts of seawater. The high annual production of> 80 million tons
classifies it as an important mineral. Physical constants: mol. weight 58.44,
colorless cubic crystals, index of refraction 1.5442, density 2.165, melting
point 801°C, boiling point 1413 °C, solubility in water (g dm- 3 ) 357 at 0 °C
and 391 at 100°C. A quantity of 3.710 16 tons is present in seawater. ~sea salt.
sofar stands for SOund Fixing And Ranging, and is an acoustic method of
locating underwater objects at large distances. It utilizes the fact that the
sound speed has a local minimum at a particular depth in most oceans,
which therefore is able to act as a wave guide: the sound channel, to which
the energy of a sound source is refracted. As the energy decrease within
such a channel is proportional to distance, rather than to distance squared
much greater signaling distances can be bridged.
solar constant solar energy falling per unit of time on a unit of surface that is
perpendicular to the radiation, and that is at the mean distance of the earth
from the sun (1.5 10 11 m). The solar constant is used in formulas giving the
seasonal variation of the solar radiation reaching the earth.
solarimeter ~pyranometer.
solar radiation ~light.
solar tide tide caused by the interaction of the sun and the rotating earth ( ~tide).
The solar tide is usually about one-third of the lunar tide. The solar tide is
indicated by S2 and has a period of exactly 12 h.
Solenogastres ~Aplacophora.
solitary wave water waves cannot always be described by a sinusoidal variation
of the elevation. Some wave phenomena have a solitary character, with each
wave practically independent of the other, like waves propagating over very
shallow water. After breaking near the coast the remainder of the wave can
