anoxic processes or anaerobic processes. Microbiologically mediated processes,
which occur only in the absence of free oxygen.
anoxygenic photosynthesis is the use of light energy to synthesize ATP by cyclic
photophosphorylation without oxygen production, e.g., in green and purple
bacteria. The accessory H-donor is not from H 2 0 as in the oxygenic photosynthesis.
Anthozoa (older name Actinozoa) class of phylum Cnidaria (syn. Coelenterata),
comprising sea anemones, corals, and sea pens. Sedentary, solitary, or colonial coelenterates with a polyp generation only. Polyps are more complexly
organized than in other Cnidaria. Coelenteron divided by at least eight mesenteries, which bear the gonads, derived from the endoderm. The Anthozoa are
divided into two subclasses. The first subclass is Octocorallia (polyps with
eight tentacles). The other subclass is the Zoantharia or Hexacorallia (polyps
with more than eight tentacles), with the orders Zoanthidea (without skeleton), Actiniaria or sea anemones, Madreporaria or Scleractinia or stony corals,
Corallimorpharia or corals without skeleton, Ceriantharia (anemones living in
a tube), and the Antipatharia or black corals.
antibiotics are chemical agents produced by one organism which are harmful to
other organisms; e.g., the microorganisms Streptomyces, Penicillium, and
Bacillus produce the antibiotics streptomycin, penicillin, and bacitracin,
respectively. Thousands of antibiotic substances are known and yearly hundreds more are discovered. Antibiotics of various kinds have been detected
in the sea. These are produced especially by algae and reach active concentrations, particularly in phytoplankton blooms. Probably they play a role,
because at the time of the phytoplankton maximum the saprophytic bacteria have reached their annual minimum.
antibody a protein present in the serum or other body fluid that combines
specifically with an antigen.
anticyclonic flow ~cyclonic flow.
antidune bedform produced by unidirectional flow of water; shape is in phase
with standing surface water waves. May move upstream or downstream;
name derived from possible upstream movement. ~sedimentary structures.
antigen substance, usually macromolecular, that induces specific antibody formation in the serum or other body fluids.
anti node ~standing wave.
