lesser freshening associated with the return of the Great Salinity
Anomaly to the region in 1981-82 [Dickson, Meincke, Malmberg and Lee,
1988] might well have caused some local suppression of convection since
the interannual minimum in windstress curl at that time (see Figure 5)
could support only a small-scale, leaky gyre circulation. The relatively
light ice conditions which characterised the area in the the 1980's d. the
1970's, with less brine rejection to initiate convection, is perhaps a more
plausible supplementary mechanism, as Meincke, Jonsson and Swift, [1992]
point out.

Remote Effects on the Deep Waters of the Norwegian Sea
Since Norwegian Sea Deep Water [NSDW] is partly made up of GSDW, ~
most probably in a 2:1 mixture of AODW and GSDW according to Swift
and Koltermann [1988], who discuss the recipe, ~ it is not surprising that
