Description :
This book presents the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Decadal climate Variability: Dynamics and Predictability", which was held in February 1995 in Les Houches, France, and was aimed to introduce young scientist into the current state of the field.
The focus was on modeling, analyzing and understanding of ocean atmospheric interactions, primarily on decadal time scales, although this cannot be well separated from both shorter and longer time scale processes.
Major topics addressed were observed characteristics patterns of natural variability on decadal time scales in the coupled atmosphere ocean system, the generation mechanisms which are presently not well understood, the potential predictability of long term variability, the possibility of rapid climate regime shifts on several timescales, the causes for the large changes taking place at the present time in the northern seas of the Atlantic ocean.
Among the discussed subject we mention:
" Observed climatic variability: time dependence.
" Observed climatic variability: spatial structure.
" Predictability of the atmosphere and oceans: from days to decades.
" Mechanisms for decadal-to-centennial climate variability.
" Long term coordinated changes in the convective activity of the north Atlantic
" A mechanism for decadal climate variability.
" The climate response to the changing greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere.
" Analysis of thermohaline feedbacks.
" An overview of century time-scale variability in the climate system: observations and models.
" Steady states and variability in oceanic zonal flows.
" Spectral methods: what they can and cannot do for climatic series.
