global change community (methane emission). The customer DGs are DG
IB (External Economic and Development Co-operation), DG VI
(Agriculture) and DG XI (Environment). The project will mainly use radar
images of ERS-1/2, complemented by Radarsat and JERS data for selected
test sites. A work-plan has been produced and discussed with the customer
DGs. A science report has been produced to validate the use of radar images
for rice paddy detection. An ERS data acquisition plan has been developed,
which indicate that approx. 300 ERS SAR scenes are required.
The Global Vegetation Monitoring (GVM) Unit of SAI coordinates this
project.
3.2.5
FMERS project
The FMERS project will map the European forest areas with remote
sensing data and investigate the usefulness of remote sensing for the retrieval
of forest biomass parameters. Various sensors and analysis techniques will
be used, including standard optical high-resolution optical (5 m) and radar
data. The project is building on the experience of past work at the
Environmental Mapping and Modeling Unit of JRC-SAI and will integrate
the available experience.
The work is divided into two parts:
The first part of the work will focus on forest area and forest
composition. More precisely, the three main aims are: a) evaluate and
quantify forest composition and species in two study regions; b)
compare satellite data usage vs. traditional methods; c) investigate
portability of methods to the entire continent of Europe on a 3/5 year
basis.
The second part will focus on forest volume by providing basis for the
evaluation of potential use of existing methods and techniques for
mapping forest volume.
The Environmental Mapping and Modeling (EMAP) Unit of SAI
coordinates this project.

Demonstration case studies
The CEO Program has put together a collection of Demonstration Case
Studies, which serve to illustrate the broad range of application areas of
Earth Observation (EO) information to existing and potential customers of
EO. Since September 97, users can consult two CEO databases:
1. The Demonstration Case study database is moderated by CEO, it provides
practical examples of the operational use of Earth Observation data and
techniques with reference to costs and specific customers. The CEO
