3. THE CEO INITIATIVES TO COLLECT AND ANALYZE USER
REQUIREMENTS FOR EARTH OBSERVATION
3.2.2
ATLAS project
The project has been scoped to fully satisfy EUROSTAT requirements.
Given that EUROSTAT is already quite knowledgeable regarding EO
capabilities, the interest focuses on the investigation of the potentiality of
high-resolution satellite for urban land use maps. Two cities (Athens and
Berlin) have been selected to provide maps of urban land-cover, as well as
land-cover changes, that have occurred within the last few years, at a
nominal scale of 1:25,000. Data from IRS-1C, KVR-1000 will be used in
addition to coherence maps generated by ERS-1 and ERS-2.
The Environmental Mapping and Modeling (EMAP) Unit of SAI
coordinates this project.
3.2.3
DESIMA project
The project aims at developing a Decision Support System for Coastal
Zones (CZ-DSS). A generic system will be developed which is customizable
according to specific requirements related to the monitoring and
management of coastal zones. In particular, the system focuses on four initial
themes:
1. aquaculture management,
2. development of fisheries information systems,
3. coastal ecosystem management, and
4. sea surface level estimation.
Regarding theme 1, aquaculture management, the activity foresees the
design and planning of a prototype DSS for coastal areas in Thailand,
responding to a specific request of DG-I B/C (External Economic and
Development Co-operation: South- and Southeast Asia), which provides
counterpart funding to this project. A detailed work plan has been developed
for theme 1, including an analysis of user requirements, a conceptual system
design and a prototype CZ-DSS demonstrator. Theme 1 acts as a model to
develop the generic CZ-DSS. This will be adapted according to themes 2-4,
following the prototype development for theme 1.
The Marine Environment Unit of SAI coordinates the project.
3.2.4
SEARRI project
The SEARRI project aims at developing a system to monitor wetland rice
areas in Southeast Asia and to provide this information to two major user
groups: agro-economists (foreign agricultural crop production) and the
