CHAPTER 10
Sea and River Weeds
10.1
Metals
70.7.7
Cobalt
It has been reported [546] that no loss of cobalt occurs during the dry ashing of
seaweed in porcelain crucibles at 450-550 °c. The cobalt could be removed from the
crucible with hydrochloric acid.
70.7.2
Mercury
Kulduere and Andreassen [668] determined mercury in seawater weed by cold vapour
atomic absorption spectrometry.
70.7.3
Molybdenum
Colborn [669] determined low levels of down to 0.05 mg kg- 1 molybdenum in insects
by atomic absorption spectrometry of ION hydrochloric acid digests of the samples.
70.7.4
Tin
The graphite furnace atomic absorption method [198], discussed under tin in
Sect. 3.1.5 for the determination of tin in lake sediments, has also been applied to the
determination of tin in aquatic plants.
70.7.5
Zinc
No loss of zinc occurs [546] during dry ashing of seaweed in porcelain crucibles at
450-550°C.
