The study concerns the solution of specific geological and geotechnical problems,
in particular the planned transfer of surface water from the glacier-fed Melamchi
River in the High Himalaya to the Kathmandu Valley. As the study area is prone
to geo-hazards, the geo-environmental conditions and constraints had to be
analysed, and by means of stereo-relief construction, data integration and network
analysis, an optimal ground route for the water transfer had to be determined .

CASE STUDY
According to a master plan by UNDP and WHO, the water transfer scheme will
consist of an intake from the Melamchi River, a 27 km long tunnel, storage
reservoirs and a treatment plant to provide drinking and irrigation water for the
Kathmandu Valley. Supported by geological field and ground truth work, the
search for an optimal ground route for the planned water transfer was based, first
of all, on the evaluation and integration of existing and new databases ; they
