endemic C. vornatscheri bulgaricus (Flossner, 1980),
the lowlands of the lower Danube River (c. orghidani and C. brevipalpis), to Kerkyra (= Korfu), and
the west coast of the Apenine Peninsula (c. kerkyrensis) (Cottarelli & Mura, 1979b). North and northeast of the bairdi-group (in the east to Lake Baikal
and the Lena river) the pristicephalus-group occurs
(Fig. 4), with four species in Europe. C. carnuntanus
inhabits the Pannonian Lowland (exceptionally in the
northern Bohemian Lowland and in Moscow territory). C. josephinae, extends from western, central and
eastern Poland, to the Lena River and Baikal Lake in
Siberia. C. ripophilus is endemic to the Jaroslav district
in Russia. C. shadini, finally, is distributed from the
Urals, through central and northern Russia, to Poland,
Slovakia, Hungary, and northeast Austria.
The diaphanus-group includes (Fig. 5) the
widespread Chirocephalus diaphanus, along with six
other less broadly distributed species. C. diaphanus
in western Europe is almost continuously distributed
from Great Britain south of 55 ON, through the Netherlands, Germany (east to the Rhine River), Belgium,
France and adjacent parts of Switzerland, to the Iberian Peninsula, the Apennine Peninsula, and Sicily. An
isolated northern occurrence is in Poland, at the mouth
of the river Vistula. To the East, it extends south of
the Alps and South of about 47 ON, through eastern
Hungary and Romania to the Black Sea, and through
the Balkan to the Island of Crete. The Balkan populations belong to the subspecies C. diaphanus carinatus and the Romanian populations belong to the subspecies C. diaphanus romanicus (but the subspecies
