Fig. 7.3. Flow of the Rhine-Meuse water along the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany
and Denmark; SW wind 4.5 m s - 1, water mass fractions in %, age distribution indicated
as solid lines in days (derived from De Ruyter et al. 1987). At NW winds a maximum
fraction of 10% of Rhine-Meuse water enters the Oosterschelde estuary. (Nienhuis 1993)
In this Chapter the status of macrophyte-related eutrophication will be
recorded along the coasts of Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and
Belgium. The phenomena along the North Sea coast will be stressed and
Danish examples from the outlets of the Baltic area will be cited. The North
Sea extends its hydrographic impact to the Skagerrak-Kattegat-Belt Sea area,
where deep, saline water enters the Baltic and low saline surface water flows
in the opposite direction. The Baltic proper is beyond the scope of this
chapter. (See Chap. 5, this Vol.)
