temperature (Fig. 4). P04 3 --P values in the upper layer at the coast ranged between
1.5 - 2.0 mg-at m- 3 during this survey (Fig. 3 c).
The observations made by the "Anton Bruun" on Cruise 4 A in October, 1963 (U.S.
Program in Biology IIOE, 1965), complete the picture of the cycle of events. Stations
175 -180 virtually repeat the "Discovery" section off the Kuria Muria Islands; they
show no indication of upwelling, and the warm surface layer is present at the station
closest to the coast. The 1.0 mg-at P m -3 isoline at this time lay deeper than 50 m.

b) The Southeast Arabian Upwelling
The "Discovery" stations of July and August, 1963 were positioned at 10 mile
intervals close to the coast opening to a 3D-mile separation further offshore. The
distance between transects varied, as did their length, but lay around 100 miles between
the sections while the sections extended up to 200 miles or more from the coast. Throughout the survey strong SW winds prevailed and there was a considerable degree of hydrographic complexity, emphasizing the extremely dynamic state of the circulation (Fig. 5).
