The "Discovery" observations in the summer of 1963 provide the most complete
picture of the circulation at the peak of the SW monsoon (Royal Society, 1963). Five
lines of stations, roughly normal to the Arabian coast, were worked at the end of June
and beginning of July, and on 4 of these sections there is evidence of very active upwelling
in the coastal belt. The extent of this can be seen from the depression of sea surface
