II. The Subtropical Anticyclonic Gyre
The subtropical gyre consists of the South Equatorial Current, the Agulhas Current
system and those portions of the west wind drift, which lie north of the subtropical
convergence, situated near 40

S. There is little evidence of an eastern boundary current
along Australia. The warm water in the gyre extends rather deep, the 12 0 C isothermal
surface is depressed to more than 600 m depth in the southwestern Indian Ocean, while it
