north of 9° 58' S and to the south of 28 ° 30' S. In midocean a single juvenile was caught
at 16° S, 81 ° E on the "Argo" Monsoon Expedition.
Both the tropical and southern populations of E. similis are breeding populations.
Larvae were present in the tropical zone throughout the year; gravid, spermatophorebearing females were observed in September, October, December, and January, - all

between the Equator and 5° S. Larvae were observed in the southern zone during June,
September, and December.
As yet, we have no evidence that the tropical population lives deeper than that to the
south. Of 33 samples of E. similis from standard 0 - 200 m collections made at night
withing the tropical zone, 16 contained adults and 12 more contained juveniles. (Daytime
records were all of larvae.)
