The Distribution of Indian Ocean Euphausiids
371
The distribution of Euphausia simi/is is anomalous (Fig. 11). Known chiefly as a
circumglobal subantarctic species (JOHN, 1936) and as whale food off southern Japan
(NEMOTO, 1959) E. simi/is would be an unlikely resident of the tropics. Its occurrence
in the East Indian Archipelago was reported by HANSEN (1910, 1916), the South China
Sea by BRINTON (1962), and the Indian Ocean, 9° N-9° S, by TATTERSALL (1912, 1939),
ILLIG (1930), and WEIGMANN (1970).

Though E. similis is not known to live in the Pacific except for the nearshore records
shown in Fig. 11 (and the subantarctic zone), the HOE material confirms that its range
extends across much of the Indian Ocean, excepting the Arabian Sea and the Bay of
Bengal. It lives primarily in the zones OO-lO o S and 28°-50 0 S. Evidence that this
species is virtually lacking between 10 ° Sand 28 ° S is provided by the midwater trawl
collections of "Anton Bruun" cruises 3 and 6, along the 60° E and 65° E meridians
respectively. Along both transects, E. similis was present in the trawl samples only to the
