The Distribution of Indian Ocean Euphausiids
369
extends from near 35
0
S northward to the southern limits of the Arabian Sea and the Bay
of Bengal (Fig. 9a, b). Again, more northward occurrences are near the Andaman Islands,
though some immature individuals were found on the Indian coast. T. aequalis lives
mainly in the 0
0
-10 0 N zone, to which Euphausia pseudogibba was seen also to be
restricted, save for the records south of Java. T. subaequalis is found from the Equator
southward, occupying the combined ranges of Euphausia paragibba and E. hemigibba.

A species of the Euphausia gibboides group living in the western part of the Indian
Ocean is now recognized as Euphausia sanzoi TORELLI (1934) (BRINTON, 1962; PONOMAREVA, 1969; WEIGMANN, 1970). The IIOE collections show E. sanzoi to occur along
the full latitudinal extent of the western side of the Indian Ocean, 25
0
N - 30 0 S (Fig.
lOa, b). Even where E. sanzoi was consistently caught (off Kenya, Pakistan), there were
few specimens per sample. The sampling was evidently inadequate for describing more
than the gross aspect of the range of this species.
