E. BRINTON and K. GOPALAKRISHNAN:
southernmost species in the genus, N. megalops, was sparsely sampled. Most occurrences
were in the zone of 35 0 - 40 ° S during both seasons.
All of the 11 recognized species of Stylocheiron were found in the Indian Ocean.
Stylocheiron indicum SILAS and MATIHEWS (1967) is evidently endemic to the Arabian
Sea - Bay of Bengal region, S. microphthalma is equatorial, as in the Pacific, while S. suhmi
lives mainly between 10° Sand 30° S (Fig. 7 a, b).

Fig.4a. Euphausia brevis, May-September
Stylocheiron insulare HANSEN (1910) appeared at 4 "Anton Bruun" localities in the
Andaman Sea and at one "Vitiaz" locality south of Java. These are the only Indian Ocean
records for this species. Curiously, it did not appear in the "Kistna" cruise 14 samples
from the Andaman Sea. The entire known range of S. insulare is shown in Fig. 12. Yearround sampling in the Gulf of Thailand-South China Sea region by Naga expedition
(BRINTON and WATANAPRIDA, 1963) and the Strait of Malacca (WICKSTEAD, 1961) did
not yield this species. This supports the possibility that S. insulare is actually restricted to
the regions illustrated.
