1. The Distribution of Euphausiids
Pseudeuphausia latifrons is an abundant coastal species in the northern part of the
Indian Ocean. During May-September (Fig. 1 a) high densities were commonest off the
coast of Arabia, both coasts of India, and in the Andaman Sea. This is the only euphausiid

November - March
Fig. 1 b. Pseudeuphausia latifrons and Nyctiphanes capensis distribution, November- March
occurring in the shallow Strait of Malacca (WICKSTEAD, 1961), where it was sampled
during cruise 19 of "Kistna". Evidently this neritic waterway is not an inter-ocean path for
other euphausiid species (BRINTON, 1963).
Moderate densities of P. latifrons were found close to shore in the Somali Current
during the SW monsoon, but only scattered individuals occured there, and more offshore,
during November- March (Fig. 1 b). Similarly, this species was not abundant off Arabia
or in the northern part of the Bay of Bengal during November- March, as compared with
May - September.
