reef waters usually comprises 1O-30mgCm- 2 day-l (cf. Sect. 3.2.2). Higher
microbial production was recorded most often in waters with higher
biomass, e.g., up the reefs abundant in living corals, such as the atolls and
ring reefs Majuro, Butaritari, Heron, or the barrier reefs off New Guinea or
off the Great Barrier Reef (Tables 3.1, 3.3) . On reefs with weak coral
growth the microbial production in the water column was low (Sorokin
1986). At the cross sections the maxima of microbial production were
usually observed in waters of shallow lagoons, up the lagoonal patch reefs,
