Procaryote
cells (orange fluorescence) exceeded eucaryote cells (red fluorescence) by 100 times the oligotrophic waters. However, in the
eutrophic waters near and on Georges Bank, procaryotes exceeded
eucaryotes by only ten times, indicating the dominance of a population on and around Georges Bank of largely diatoms and dinoflagellates.
These groups of organisms were virtually absent in the
oligotrophic waters seaward of the Bank.
