Fig. 3. Monthly determination of metallothionein content in intestine. liver, gills and kidney of Diplodus puntazzo.
Determinations were performed on 7 animals separately. Data are expresssed as mean ± SD. Kidney values were obtained from
a pool of 7 tissues
Table 2. Correlations between metallothionein content in different tissues and somatic indices (body wet weight and body
length) and monthly average temperatures

meters studied (Table 2), For the kidney only
body length was significantly correlated with the
metallothionein values.
As reported in Fig. 4. we monthly determined
EROD activity in liver of Diplodus puntazzo and
the total hepatic induction index (THI). which
represents the ability of the organism to
metabolise xenobiotics via the MFO (mixed
function oxidase) system, calculated as follows:
THI=enzyme activity/body wet weight
(Boersma et al. 1984). It is possible to observe a
general downwards trend either in EROD activity or in THI; the reduction appeared more evident in July, September and October. Although
One-Way ANOVA did not reveal any significant
differences between months, the correlation
between the reduction in EROD and THI and
either water temperature and somatic indices
was significant (Table 3).
