Fig.5a-d. Salinity distributions along the Gargano transect in: a spring '95; b summer '95; c autumn '95; d winter '96. The identifications at the top of the panels denote the positions of the stations
detaches from the shelf and flows in the intermediate layer along the western continental slope. A
salinity front leaning toward the Italian slope
separates the NADW from the LIW. The LIW lies
prevalently against the eastern flank between 100
and 700 m. The maximum LIW inflow occurs in
summer and autumn accompanied also by the
maximum of salinity in its core. It is important to
notice that the NADW and LIW extents are complementary in the strait interior. The notable
enhancement of salinity in the LIW core, as
found at the Otranto (5 > 38.85) and Gargano (5
> 38.75) sections, seems to be due to important
anomalies of the intermediate layer in the Ionian
Sea. This is reflected in the maximum of salinity
observed in the northern transect too (5 >
38.40), during the following winter 1996 (Fig.
3d), giving an indication of the time that the
Ionian water needs to reach the northern sections.
Dynamics and Circulation
Northern and Middle Adriatic Sea
The variability of the circulation at sub-basin
scale in the Northern and Middle Adriatic Sea is
discussed from the data collected in the spring
and autumn of 1995. These data constitute the
transition from two extreme situations, the winter one that is essentially characterised by a vertical homogeneity of the water column and a
summer one when the water column is highly
stratified. Both situations have been widely
investigated using modelling exercises and making syntheses from observations (see MalanotteRizzoli and Bergamasco 1983; Franco and
Michelato 1992). Here, the basin's response to the
fresh water buoyancy input is studied when such
a forcing event occurs, essentially in spring and
autumn, as in 1995.
