Fig. 4. '!ypical seasonal pattern of a dystrophic crisis in the
sheltered zone of the Sacca di Goro lagoon (January-July
1997). The biomass is represented as carbon (g Cm- 2 ), the dissolved oxygen concentration is given as % saturation
data), thus during this period most of the N-Ioad
was assimilated into the Ulva biomass. A more
detailed description of nitrogen cycling in the
Sacca di Goro is reported by Bartoli et al. (this
volume).
Net growth rates (NGR) attained maximum
values (O.143±O.040 d- 1 ) in April, whereas minimum rates were coincident with the lowest temperatures (6°C) in January and with the highest
standing biomass in May (Table 2). The maximum productivity. dark respiration rates and

saturating light intensities inferred from the PII
curves followed a clear seasonal trend (Table 3).
At 6°e saturation was reached at 64± 15
}lEm- 2 s-1, while at IS-20De photosynthetic saturation was attained at 125±19 p.Em- 2 s- 1 equivalent to approximately 15% of the maximum daily
photon flux. The seasonal trend of P was also
related to net growth rates and the thallus
chlorophyll content.
