Nitrate concentrations ranged from 15 to 0.42
p.M. The same distribution did not occur for
phosphate and silicate; in fact phosphate ranged
from detection limit to 0.22 p.M, while silicate
were less than 4 p.M, without showing any westeast gradient (Frache et al. in press a. b).
Concentrations of suspended matter were higher
than those found in summer and the highest values were around 20 mg/I with an average value of
6 mg/I and the inorganic fraction was about
44%. Particle numbers for volume units were half
of those found in summer; values were in the
range 15.000 to 25.000 particle/cm 3 with an average value of 19.000 particle/cm 3 , Spectral analysis
confirmed also in winter the importance of the
cluster centred on 3 p.m (45% of the 38 samples).
Also in those samples are frequent bimodal spectra with a variable mode included from 10 to 40
.,un. This sampling has been performed a few
days after a storm, consequently the water col20

umn contains elevated quantities of suspended
matter with high dimension. With respect to the
summer values, the mean size is higher with a
value of 7.5 p.m and a particle number of about
half. The TPM distribution along section A (Fig.
3) showed the presence of two maxima: the first,
in the surface layer, related to the coastal flow and
the second, near the bottom, due to resuspension
phenomena (Puskaric et aL 1992),
Current Data
Hourly current measurements were filtered in
order to eliminate the high frequencies like tidal
and inertial oscillations that did not give any significant contribution to the long term transport,
The longshore filtered component revealed an
averaged current of 3 cmls in summer and 5
cmls in winter in the southeastern direction but
