Appendix 18: Underlying calculation for the assessment of the accessibility efforts
Based on the three discussed key indicators and sub-objectives, the countries'
ex situ conservation facilities can be assessed concerning the accessibility of their
germplasm. By developing a matrix, the single judgement for the three different
criteria can be merged in one overall assessment. A good quality standard of
documentation and distribution scored 3 points, a basic standard 2 and a poor
standard 0.9 points. In addition, the existence of working collections in
conservation facilities scores an additional point, whereas no point is given to the
non-existence of a working collection:

good standard
The overall quality standard for the accessibility of PGRF A germplasm
conserved ex situ can be concluded from the calculations described. A good
quality standard is achieved by a value over 5, basic standard is still possible over
3, and a poor standard is defined to be less than 3. In this way, all the surveyed
countries can be classified into one of the three quality standards as it was done in
Table 5.18 in Chapter 5.4.
