The difference between the lipid percent of areal production and the lipid
percent of Pm (hereafter tenned the areal bias) changed over the year (Fig. 3.15).
The areal bias is an expression of the difference between the lipid percent of
production at light saturation and the lipid percent of production expressed on an
areal basis at anyone time. The lipid percent of Pm was greater than the lipid
percent of areal production in summer (i.e., negative bias), whereas the reverse
was true in winter. The areal bias was related to the changes in the photosynthetic parameters ' k and
