Substrate Level Profiles of Metabolic Pathways in Frog Heart

(3) Increased glycogen phosphorolysis, on the contrary, confirms the
well-known in vitro effect of calcium on phosphorylase-b kinase [6].
(4) The same effects on heart dynamics, when attained by ouabain injection, are accompanied not only by a very different metabolite pattern, but
also by different interrelationships within the treated groups; (for example,
at 60 sec, phosphofructokinase activation by decreased AMP; fluctuation
of many parameters after ouabain injection, undirectional behavior after calcium treatment).

i7)1--Fig. 3. Percent changes, with respect to the control groups, of the parameters
which discriminate the ouabain-treated from the control hearts. The hearts were
quick-frozen 30,60, and 120 sec after the beginning of the infusion. Abbreviations
used: substrates, see Materials and Methods; mass-action ratios (Q), see Fig. 2
and: PGLUM, phosphoglucomutase; TIM, triosephosphate isomerase
(5) The evalution of minimum metabolic deviations and the well differentiated kinetic response of intermediary metabolites to similar stimuli
should help to improve the fitting of future computer models to the real
behavior of cell systems.
