Figure 5: Relation between suspended sediment discharge (kg/s) and water discharge (Q).
Levinson-Lessing-Lake in the pre-spring period is about 1.42 km 3 . The runoff of the
Protochny stream during the summer season amounts to 0.15 to 0.18 km 3 . Thus, a complete
water exchange of the lake occurs over a 9 to 10 year period.
To calculate the Levinson-Lessing-Lake water balance for 1995, the following formula can be
applied:
Y =Yl+Y2+Y3+X+Z-E
where
Y = Protochny stream runoff
Y I = Krasnaya river runoff
Y 2 = main lake tributaries runoff
Y 3 = remaining stream network runoff
X = precipitation over the lake watershed (without the Krasnaya)
Z = ground component of the outflow
E = evaporation
The calculation approximates the total runoff Y 3 is in the same order of magnitude as Y 2,
about 0.012 km 3 . The total evaporation from the water surface and the remaining part of the
drainage basin, calculated by a certain method, is quite insignificant and less than 0.007 km 3 .
Using data of the full-scale measurements of the other components of the lake-river-system,
the following results can be obtained:
0.18= 0.12 + 0.Q18 + 0.012 + 0.01 + Z - 0.007
100 % = 67 % + 10 % + 6.7 % + 5.6 % + Z - 3.9 %
The total incoming component of the Levinson-Lessing-Lake water balance in 1995 was
about 0.16 km 3 which was 88.9 % of the Protochny stream runoff. Thus, the value of the
