of basaltic rocks of the Siberian Trap (Figure 1). Plagioclase and pyroxene observed in the
Khatanga SPM represent the primary mineral content of the Trap basalts. Smectite, on the other
hand, typically forms from weathering of basaltic rocks. For that reason, it can be stated that
the mineralogical composition of Khatanga SPM is closely related to the Siberian Trap basalts
which dominate the drainage area .

average shale
Figure 8: Average chemical composition of SPM of the Khatanga and the Siberian Trap basalt (Lightfoot et aI.,
1993). The x-axis corresponds to the composition of average shale (Wedepohl, 1971 and 1991). The diagonal
represents the straight line of identical values. AI normalized concentrations based on weight ratios (major
elements) and weight ratio' 10 4 (trace elements) are displayed. The grain-size distribution (volume %) is shown
in the upper left corner.
The average AI-nonnalized major and trace element concentrations of Khatanga SPM and the
Siberian Trap basalts (Lightfoot et aI., 1993) in comparison to average shale are illustrated in
Figure 8. In contrast to Lena and Yana SPM, most of the elements in the Khatanga SPM
showed significant deviations from average shale. Significantly higher AI-normalized
concentrations compared to average shale were observed for Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Ti,
and V. The enrichment in these elements can directly be related to the influence of the Siberian
Trap, except for Ni and V (Figure 8). AI-normalized concentrations of Ce, Hf, K, Li, Nb, Rb,
Sb, Sn, Th, TI, U, and Y were significantly lower than in average shale which is also attributed
to the Trap basalts (Figure 8). Note that for the Trap basalts there are no Cd, Li, Sb, Sn, and TI
data available. In contrast to the Lena and Yana SPM, Bal Al ratios in the Khatanga SPM were
not higher than in average shale due to smaller amounts of feldspars.
The dominance of the Siberian Trap basalts is also seen in the REE pattern of Khatanga SPM.
