REE pattern of the SPM. As a consequence of the heterogeneity of the Yana basin and the lack
of chemical data for the rocks in the catchment, it is not possible to relate the SPM of individual
tributaries to specific lithologies. However, the average Yana SPM can be clearly separated
from Lena SPM.
Khatanga SPM
Total SPM concentrations of the Khatanga ranged from 19 to 59 mgtl with an average of 32
mg/l. The grain-size distribution of two samples of Khatanga SPM is presented in the upper left
comer of Figure 8. Compared to the Yana, the clay mineral fraction was more abundant. The
SPM consisted mainly of the clay mineral smectite. The quartz content was significantly lower
than in Yana and Lena SPM, and plagioclase and pyroxene were observed. Furthermore, illite
and K-feldspars were less abundant (Table 2). The catchment of the Khatanga consists mainly
