Dana II Expedition (1928-1930) also known as the Carlsberg Foundation's
Oceanographical Expedition was a Danish expedition under Johannes
Schmidt that can be seen as the culmination of his life-long search for the
spawning area of the freshwater eel Anguilla vulgaris. Schmidt at the beginning of this century unraveled the migration habits and spawning grounds
of the cod near Iceland and Greenland during many cruises with another
well-known fishery biologist, C.G.J. Petersen, mainly on the Thor. During
these expeditions he had succeeded in finding full-grown eel larvae in the
Atlantic off the Faroe Islands in 1904; before, they had been found only in
the Mediterranean. The 1905-1906 Thor expeditions made it clear that the
European eel came from the Atlantic, the 1908-1910 expeditions proved that
it did not spawn at all in the Mediterranean. The Dana I Expedition of
1920-1922 found the spawning area in the neighborhood of the West Indies,
from which the larvae drift in two to three years to the coasts of Europe. The
Dana II expedition focused on finding the spawning areas of the other eel
species all over the world. As in the previous expeditions of J. Schmidt, of
course all pelagic organisms were collected and investigated as well as their
dependence on chemical and physical conditions of the sea.
