Although the species differ considerably in size and shape, they are all variations on a rather strict design of the body, which consists of somites (segments), that can bear one pair of appendages each. In principal the
appendages are biramous, and the two branches are called endopodite and
exopodite. In all crustaceans the head is formed by the first six somites, of
which the first has no appendages (or limbs). The second somite bears the
antennules, the third the larger antennae. The three other somites of the
head come after the mouth, and bear the mandibles, maxillules and maxillae, respectively; all these small limbs fit together round the mouth and
move the food into it. The trunk is less uniform than the head, with, depending on the species, varying numbers of somites and appendages that are
modified for different functions. The first part of the trunk is the thorax,
built of 6-11 somites, with appendages that mostly form the actual limbs.
The thorax is often fused with the head to form the cephalothorax. The
cephalothorax is covered with a protective chitinous shield, the carapace. The
thoracic limbs can be very large with claws (chelipeds) or modified for
swimming, digging, crawling, carrying eggs, etc. The number of remaining
(abdominal) somites is variable. The hindmost segment of the arthropod
abdomen is called telson. The characteristic crustacean larvae is the nauplius.
This larval stage is often followed by other different larval stages.
Crustaceans are ubiquitous. In the sea they live at all depths, benthonic as
well as pelagic and parasitic. Crustaceans are divided into eight classes,
namely Cephalocarida, Branchiopoda, Ostracoda, Mystacocarida, Copepoda,
Branchiura, Cirripedia and Malacostraca.
cryophile ~psychrophile.
(ryptomonadida ~Cryptophyta.
(ryptophyta (syn. Cryptophyceae, (ryptomonadida) phylum of the kingdom
Protoctista. Algae containing the nanoplanktonic flagellate genus Cryptomonas
and closely related organisms (also called cryptomonads). They contain
chlorophyll-c, phycocyanin, phycoerythrin, alloxanthin, (X-carotene instead of
~-carotene. The carbohydrate storage product, starch, is found outside the
plastid. The plastid color ranges from blue to red, but is mostly chestnut.
Conspicuous ejectosomes produce kinked strands on discharge. Examples:
Cryptomonas, a species usually abundant in estuarine environments, but
often overlooked because discharge of the ejectosomes easily destroys the
cells; Chilomonas, a common colorless genus in polluted water). Cryptophyta
or Cryptophyceae were formerly classified as the order (ryptomonadida (phylum Mastigophora) within the Protozoa.
CTD recorder stands for Conductivity-Temperature-Depth recorder. The instrument measures the temperature, electrical conductivity, and underwater
