catch equation
48
catch equation the relationship between catch in numbers (C) during a particular period t, the instantaneous fishing (F) and natural (M) mortality rates,
and the number (N) present at the beginning of that period: C = FI(F+M)·
N (l-e-(F+M)t).
catch per unit of effort (CPU E) the total catch, in numbers or weight, divided by the
number of fishing effort units to take that catch.
Caudofoveata -?Aplacophora.
cellulases group of enzymes, each catalyzing a different step in the depolymerization of cellulose into the disaccharide cellobiose or into glucose. The
extra-cellular enzymes are widespread in cellulose-decomposing microorganisms.
cellulose most widely distributed skeletal polysaccharide (in plants, rare in animals), usually associated with other compounds such as lignin and hemicellulose. The molecule consists of 4000 to 7000 cellobiose-units (a disaccharide), has a molecular weight of 1 to 2 106, and is insoluble in water. Depolymerization is mainly performed by microorganisms.
Cenozoic -?geological time scale.
centric diatoms -?Bacillariophyta.
centrifugal force a fictitious force that has to be introduced in the balance of
forces if this is related to a rotating coordinate system. In mechanics, a rotating body has to be continuously accelerated toward the center of rotation by
a so-called centripetal force that counteracts the effect of inertia, in order to
keep this body in its circular path of motion. If, however, the balance of
forces is considered relative to a rotating coordinate system (as we normally do on the rotating earth) the inertia appears as a radially directed force
(the centrifugal force) that must be balanced by the centripetal force exerted. On the earth, the centrifugal force is combined with the gravitational
force in the values given for the acceleration of gravity.
Cephalochordata (iancelet fish) subphylum of the phylum Chordata. They are small
« 8 cm), marine free-living chordates with an elongated, fish-like shape, but
unlike the vertebrates they have no skull, brain, or any cartilaginous or bony
skeleton. Characteristic are the typical chordate tube-like dorsal nerve-cord
with double nerve roots, the muscle blocks (myotomes), and the gill slits.
They live in shallow water, buried in coarse sand with their head protruding
for filter feeding. Example: the lancet fish Branchiostoma (syn. Amphioxus).
