Brachiopoda (lamp-shells) phylum of the Lophophorata (-tlophophore). Unsegmented sedentary marine animals with a two-valved shell. The two shells
enclose the body, not laterally like those of Bivalvia, but dorsally and ventrally. They usually live permanently fixed to a hard substrate by means
of a contractile fleshy stalk or penducle, but a few species can bury in sandy
bottoms (Lingula). They have a large coiled circular lophophore, two spiral
projections of the anterior body wall bearing a row of tentacles with cilia
for collecting food particles from the water. Brachiopoda were very common
in Paleozoic and Mesozoic times; at present the number of species is
ca. 200.
Brachyura (crabs) infraorder of the Decapoda (subphylum Crustacea).
brackish water seawater diluted by freshwater. -testuary.
Branchiopoda class of the subphylum Crustacea (phylum Arthropoda). Small crustaceans mostly living in freshwater, e.g., waterfleas and clam shrimps. The
brine shrimp (Artemia salina) can live under hypersaline conditions.
