Valdivia Expedition (1898-1899) also known as the German Deep-Sea Expedition
studied physical and biological conditions in the south east Atlantic and the
Indian Ocean under C. Chun, and penetrated the Antarctic waters as far as
ice permitted. Soundings were made with the Sigsbee sounding machine
using piano wire. Great depths were discovered between Bouvet Island and
Enderby land, proving that also the Southern Ocean was a deep ocean. The
use of closing nets enabled the collection of deep-sea pelagic fauna. These nets
could be closed at any depth avoiding the contamination with animals living
in surface waters common in earlier expeditions. This proved the existence
of a deep-sea pelagic fauna and many new species were collected including
pelagic Holothuroidea (sea cucumbers). Its staff consisted i.a of botanist w.
Schimper, hydrographer G. Schott and chemist P. Schmidt.

Varna Expedition (1882-1883) as the Dutch contribution to the First International Polar Year the Varna under M. Snellen was to set up a geomagnetic station at Port Dickson in the Yenissey estuary. C.H.D. Buys Ballot was initiator
of this expedition. Because of heavy pack ice in the Kara Sea the Varna never
reached Port Dickson, but was crushed in the ice. Measurements were continued after building a wooden observatory on the ice. Regular meteorological observations were made and H. Ekama studied optical phenomena of
the atmosphere (northern light, halos). Members of the expedition left on
1 August and traveled for 24 days over ice to Siberia. The rich biological
collections made by J. M. Ruys, the naturalist of the expedition, were in time
brought safely to the Danish vessel Dymphna. The 81 dredgings in the Kara
Sea greatly enlarged the collections of this up-to-then poorly known fauna,
but detailed reports were only published on its Crinoidea and fish.
