logarithmic profile refers to the velocity profile, and is a function representing
the logarithmic variation of flow velocity with the distance from a rigid
boundary. It gives an adequate description of the profile for the part of the
boundary layer where the stress can be considered to be constant. The velocity at
a given level is proportional to the so-called friction velocity, which is the
square root of the surface stress divided by the density and the nondimensional Von Karman constant k (about 0.41). The distance from the boundary
is scaled with the roughness length of the underlying surface, a measure of
the actual irregularity of this surface.

logistic equation the mathematical expression for the logistic equation is dN/dt=
rN(1-N/K) in which N describes a population of one species, r measures the
intrinsic per capita growth rate, and K the total carrying capacity of the community of which N is a part. This is the simplest differential equation with
two very important features which often occur in describing the dynamics
of a population: (a) when N is small the equation is reduced to an exponential equilibrium; (b) as t increases, N approaches a steady state value K without oscillations.
longevity the natural lifetime of an organism, which shows a strong positive
correlation with its size at maturity. This is probably due to longevity being
inversely proportional to total metabolic activity per unit body weight and
to the fact that the smaller the organism the higher the level of this activity.

long wave a gravity wave with a wavelength that is large compared with the depth.
This may apply to sea waves approaching the beach or to tides in the deep
ocean. They may also be called shallow water waves, although this may appear
inappropriate in the latter case. Waves with a wavelength 20 times the water
depth are considered long waves. Their phase velocity (c) equals the group
velocity and is given by c = -Jrii5J, where g is the acceleration of gravity and
