fishing mortality rate
128
fishing mortality rate the rate at with fish die due to fishing. Mortality rates are
commonly expressed in terms of instantaneous rates per unit time. FOol is the
fishing mortality rate at which the slope of the yield per recruit curve is 10%
of the value at the origin. F med corresponds to a spawning stock biomass per
recruit equal to the inverse of 50% percentile of the observed number of
recruits divided by spawning stock biomass and F max is associated with the
maximum yield per recruit on a yield per recruit curve.
fish production the biomass produced by a fish population or community per unit of
space and time. In fishery science or ecological research the term is used to
indicate total production which besides somatic growth includes the generation of reproductive materials, and also the production lost through mortality.
fish trap construction of fences (steel or wood) across rivers and streams, leading migrating fish into a fyke or small chamber where they can be collected.
Fish trap. (MUlier' 982)
fjord long narrow inlet or sea-arm, steep-walled and with a V-shaped profile
due to previous glacier erosion often several hundred meters deep. A fjord is
typically situated in a mountainous coast at higher latitudes. It has a shallow
sill or threshold near its mouth and becomes deeper inland. Due to this morphology the deep water layers may be anoxic. ~coast.
Flagellata flagellates, ~Mastigophora .
flagellum (pI. flagella) a long hair-like lash, which by a rowing or undulating
motion draws or propels the body or attracts particles; responsible for
movement in unicellular organisms (Flagellata, ~Mastigophora) and used for
water movement through the body in sponges. ~cilia.
flame cell hollow organ with a bundle of cilia which work in the lumen. They are
usually connected by canals which ultimately open to the exterior.
