seeding problems. Kroon and Ganssen (1989) reported that planktic foraminifera numbers increase
at upwelling fringes. Based on their observations
siliceous organisms flourish during the early stage
of the upwelling cycle, whilst planktic foraminifera
increase their numbers later when the upwelling
waters start to warm up.
Concentrations of Foraminifera at
Different Tow Depth Levels
All stations along a north-south transect at about
10° W from 4° N to 4° S show maximum abundances ofliving planktic foraminifera in the uppermost 50 m (Fig. 3; Kemle-von Miicke 1994). The
