Fig. 3. Research agenda following the intention to keep the Mediterranean socio-economical system
in equilibrium under changing global boundary conditions
climate of large scale land surface changes. which occurred in the past, can be
studied.
The analysis of data from the operational network provides more accurate and
detailed information about more recent fluctuations of the climate. Nevertheless
more efforts have to be invested on the following items:
1. Intensification of the cooperation between operational services and research
groups dealing with data evaluation and interpretation.
2. More stations should be entrained to enable a more detailed study of spatial
differences (such as the influence of the sea in coastal regions or of mountains
which is done in some countries already). Efforts should be undertaken to
include in addition to data of the operational national networks also data
measured by other agencies and industry.
3. Accuracy criteria and validation procedures have further to be developed and
strictly applied:
Aggregation techniques to build up area averages compatible with the grid
widths of models may have to be refined.
The various applied evaluation schemes and statistics should be
intercompared and causes for differing conclusions be studied and
published.
Work should be concentrated on trends of amplitudes and frequencies of
extreme events.
