The data base should be extended to marine data on sea-atmosphere
interactions and to areas adjacent to the Mediterranean basin (e.g. with
state parameters over the Atlantic or the Indian Oceans) to study large scale
interdependencies.
Possibilities should be investigated to incorporate most recent data in
nearly real time and to see how this updating may influence suggested
trends (e.g. impact of the recent regionally very wet winters on
precipitation statistics).
The community involved in this data evaluation and interpretation should
establish a network respectively a consortium to broaden the data base and the scope
of investigations and, finally, to provide the wider scientific community with
continuously updated and validated information.
2 Research into the problems of the potentially altering water cycle is closely
related to the evaluation of climate data specifically precipitation (item I). But it is
more complex since it needs in addition information about various processes in the
atmosphere (such as cloud - aerosol relationships, convective processes and more
precise information about extreme events), at the surface (energy budget, ecosystemevaporation relationships, area evaporation) and in the sea (exchange with Atlantic
ocean and black Sea, thermohaline circulations, gyres). Both carbon dioxide fluxes
and aerosol concentrations are for different reasons strongly related to the water
cycle.
The marine community has made great progress in understanding and modelling
the water flow in the Mediterranean Sea and is working towards linking these
phenomena with atmospheric processes. Large research projects like the
Mediterranean Forecasting System Science have been initiated as a contribution to
the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) which is exemplary in linking regional
processes with the global system.
Many data have been assessed by individual researchers, national water
authorities, the Plan Bleu, the MED-HYCOS 3 and "Global Water Partnership"
initiative, and during field experiments in which aircraft measurements as well as
