ROSEL T/OSS Network in the African arid regions
321
Environmental informations collection, and technical know-how of the interveneers
ofthe observatories allowing to accompany development projects at the level of their
definition and at the levels of the study of environmental impacts.
C4: Desertification indicators production
Desertification biophysical and socio-economic indicators, attached on one hand to
the causes of desertification, both natural (climatic factors) and anthropic (man
pressure on his surroundings), and on the other hand to the effects of desertification
on the biological surroundings (vegetation, fauna, farming systems), physical (soils,
waters), and socio-economic (activities, living conditions, etc ... ).
C5: Biodiversity indicators production
Richness in salvage species and those used by the local populations; assessment
between gains and losses of the different constitutive components of biodiversity; list
of endangered species and ecosystems (the unlisted); conservation measures and
practices.
C6: Indicators production for the analysis of climatic changes
Specific indicators usable for soils contracts analysis and carbon stocks evaluation:
states of soils surface, recovery rate of different vegetation stratum and vegetal
biomass production.
C7: Reports and thematic maps
Reports productions (support reports to development projects; thematic assessments;
methodological reports; prospective reports), and thematic maps at different scale.
Annex 1
Long-term Environmental Monitoring Activities
From the mapping elements of the preliminary stage, reference zones can be selected
for the ecological monitoring.
Each dominant "form of vegetation" of the rural landscape, either spontaneous
or artificial, each dominant "form of land", will undergo the setting up of a
permanent observation device (parcels of some hundreds or some thousands of
square metres of surface). The number and the repartition of these devices must be
established according to a sampling plan taking into account the heterogeneity ofthe
space and its methods of utilization and management. In all the stations retained,
it will be established permanent squares, permanent lines or bands, or any
sustainable device that allows a rigorous location of ecological and agro-ecological
reference units, to be submitted to repetitive measurings under variable weathers,
according to the types of questions that will determine the protocols of
measurements and observations to be set up.
Monitoring of lands cover and states of soils surface:
Maps regularly updated with a more up-to-date presentation of:
- Vegetal formations (with identification criteria);
- Forms of vegetation (with their identification criteria);
