Figure 10: Instantaneous streamfunctions in the two model layers, as calculated by the
eddy-resolving quasigeostrophic model. The topography amplitude is bo = 500 m, the two
layers have equal mean heights Hi = 2500 m, the reduced gravity is g' / 9 = 0.001 and
the amplitude of the windstress is TO = 10- 4m 2 8 - 2 . The isolines are placed at regular
intervals of 5000m 2 s- 1 .
barotropic vorticity constraints. Although the phase shift of this deflection relative to the topography is small and not visible in the figures, it is
sufficient to induce a large topographic form stress.
Apart from the synoptic scale variability, the system has temporal variability on much longer timescales. Figure 2 (in the introduction) displays
the transport and the potential energy of an integration over 180 years
using the same parameter set as for the Figures 10 and (11). The potential
energy gives a low-pass filtered view and we can clearly identify significant
variations in the range from years to a decade.
The time mean balance of such experiments has been investigated by
many authors (e. g. McWilliams et al. 1978, Wolff and Olbers 1989,
Treguier and McWilliams 1990, Wolff et al. 1991). These studies have
