2.3 Future of geomatics standardisation 51
Strength
The ISO/TC211 has become the worldwide-accepted umbrella group for the standardisation of geomatics. It has succeeded in engaging the national bodies and kindred organizations in the development of the suite of International Standards. The
ISO/TC211 has evolved as the competent group that is able to represent geomatics,
fairly independently of national and industrial influences and with a sufficiently clear
border to other fields ofISO.
Weakness
In geomatics a lot of private standards are already in place with some of them being de-facto standards. The newer ISO standards cannot replace them on a short-term
basis and it might therefore, take a long period until the ISO standards are implemented.
Opportunities
The ISO/TC211 has formulated the abstract basis for the whole world of geomatics. Through its neutral position it has become the co-ordinator of many activities in
the geomatics business. Productive collaborations among liaison and national members have been or will be initiated. The first co-operative agreement was signed with
the Open GIS Consortium (OGC), followed by the International Hydrographie Organization (!HO). Other organizations such as the Digital Geographie Information
Working Group (DGIWG) are likely to follow too. The close cooperation with national associations is also anticipated.
The registry (ISO 1913 5) opens a flexible interface from the ISO 19100 standards
to a wide range of worldwide applications. The registry will not only allow keeping
track of ISO compliant standards but it will also be a continuously growing source of
geomatics implementations beyond the scope of ISO/TC211.
The ISO 19100 standards were chosen as the reference for a number of emerging
technologies.
The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) is promoting a globally coordinated approach to geomatics.
The Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe Initiative (INSPIRE) sets the
framework for a geomatics infrastructure in Europe.
The United Nations (UN) are going to build their implementations in geomatics
on ISO 19100 standards.
The ISO/TC21I has established an Advisory Group on Strategy to address future
directions and report to the chairman.
Promotional activities
In the past there were concerns about the ISO 19100 standards not being weil
known and as a consequence not widely used. The ISO/TC211 has therefore started
an outreach campaign to create awareness of its standards.
