2 Geomatics standards
The ereation of awareness will support applieation-oriented activities including
implementation of transfer standards by vendors, implementation of data eataloguing
standards by data producers, and implementation of metadata standards by vendors
and general users.
The development of awareness will include edueation and training as weil as the
ereation of user eommunities.
The ISO/Te211 has established the Advisory Group on Outreaeh to follow up the
promotional aetivities.
Political background
Many countries are beginning to understand the tremendous value of geographie
information systems and their data for goveming the commonwealth. In the USA,
the homeland seeurity takes a strong interest in building a geographie data infrastrueture for improving the emergency management including the fight against terrorism
and better disaster management. The U.S. also supports the development of aglobai
spatial data infrastrueture (GSDI) beeause GIS is believed to offer an effective
weapon against global terrorism.
The development of the European spatial data infrastructure is govemed by the
long tradition and high quality of the property eadastre and topographie portrayal on
this continent. Another strong eomponent is led by the needs for environmental proteetion. The INSPIRE-initiative is taking eare of an integrated approach of all eountries ofthe European Union.
