mobile services in the near future and is pushing for standardisation at the
boundaries of geographic information, general databases, and mobile positioning
systems.
3. The base standards only focused on vector geometries as the field of gridded data
- digital images, coverages, and elevation models seemed - too large and unknown to be included in the first attempt at geomatics standards. The projects on
imagery standards started in 200 I.
The new direction of the ISO/TC211 is formally reflected in the reorganization of
the Working Groups (WGs). The only remaining original group is WG 4 (Geospatial
services). The titles of the new WGs are WG 6 (lmagery), WG 7 (Information communities), WG 8 (Location based services), and WG 9 (Information management).
As yet, only a few of the standards of the ISO 19100 family have been published
as International Standards. However, most of the standardisation projects of
ISO/TC211 will be completed in near future. Therefore, aIl standardisation projects
are addressed as "ISO standards" in this book.

Since that time Mr. 0stensen has always been involved in the work of international standardisation. He was convenor of Working Group I (Framework of
