Initiatives and Actions for the Mediterranean and/or Black Sea
MEDITERRANEAN ACTION PLAN (MAP) OF UNEP (UN ENVIRONMENTAL
PROGRAMME)
The MAP - Mediterranean Action Plan - has carried out pilot programmes on coastal
management based on co-operation between UNEP, local and national organisations.
Direction is provided by a Co-ordinating Unit for the MAP at UNEP.
INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR COASTAL AND OCEAN POLICY STUDIES -
ICCOPS
ICCOPS is located at the University of Genoa, Italy. It focuses on training and
education for integrated coastal management (ICM) especially in relation to the
Mediterranean area. ICCOPS is also the home of the Ocean and Coastal Management
Archives (OCMA) multimedia project with support from the Department Polis and
Library Service Centre “N. Carboneri” of the Univ. of Genoa, plus the Chamber of
Commerce of Genoa. Typical of ICCOPS activities are the forthcoming international
conference on Education and Training in Integrated Coastal Area Management - the
Mediterranean Project, held in Genoa, Italy in May 1998.
EURO-MEDITERRANEAN CENTRE ON INSULAR COASTAL DYNAMICS -
ICOD
ICoD is situated at the Foundation for International Studies at Valletta, Malta, where it
has been operational since May, 1987, although it took its present name in 1993.
ICoD is involved in both research and workshops on risk modelling, assessment and
management, application of space technology for prevention and management of
insular coastal hazards, training courses in GIS, the proposed Seaweb network for
information provision and the Mediterranean Marine Information network -
MEDINFO. MEDINFO is a “cooperative regional network of marine libraries,
information and documentation centres located in the Mediterranean and Black Sea
areas, which is available on-line via the Web. The database of contacts contains a 140
page directory listing over 85 institutions involved in marine or environmental
research throughout the region.
