Coastal/Marine GI/GIS - A Pan-European Perspective
49
MEDISLE - Mediterranean Island Coastal Network - is another ICoD
initiative, proposed in 1996, with support from the Council of Europe, to promote the
sustainable development of Mediterranean islands. MEDISLE will focus squarely on
the often unique problems relating to the land-sea interface in the planning and
management of small islands, which are especially vulnerable to natural disturbances.
They have extensive and complex coastal zones, the health of which is often of critical
importance to the inhabitants, whether human, animal or flora. The MEDISLE
concept follows the recommendations of the Tunis Declaration on Sustainable
Development in the Mediterranean Basin and with Agenda 21 for the Mediterranean
and with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
MEDCOAST INSTITUTE
The MEDCOAST Initiative started with its first International Conference on
Mediterranean Coastal Environment in Antalya, Turkey in November 1993 with the
objective of contributing to environmental management in the Mediterranean and
Black Sea via research, human resources development, information exchange and
technology transfer.
MEDCOAST Institute 1994 focused on Coastal Zone
Management in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. MEDCOAST Institute 95 was held
in Ankara and Marmaris and concentrated more on real case studies of coastal
environment problems in the Mediterranean and Black Sea rather than on theoretical
lectures. MEDCOAST 97 was held in Qawra, Malta in November 1997. The
MEDCOAST initiative (the study institutes and shorter conferences) was partly funded
by the EC’s Med-Campus programme.
EUROPEAN DIRECTORY OF MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL DATA (EDMED)
EDMED is a computer searchable directory of data sets relating to the marine
environment created under the EC’s DG XII MAST programme (see reference earlier
in this chapter), and is a collaborative venture 11 EU Member States (Belgium,
Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain
and the UK). The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) in the UK maintains
EDMED.
Initiatives and Actions for the Baltic Sea
The two major actions relating to GI/GIS and marine/coastal zone research in the
Baltic Sea are the Baltic Sea Drainage Basin GIS Project of UNEP/GRID-Arendal and
the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM), which are
described more fully below. There are other initiatives that include CZ research
projects in the region, but they are part of global programmes that are covered
elsewhere in this chapter (see “International Initiatives/Programmes Active in
Europe”).
