Common name: Mormyrid.
Distribution: Africa: Gambia, Senegal,
Niger, Volta, and Chad Basins (Froese
and Pauly, 2011b).
Habitat: Rivers.
Description: Depth of body of this species is 3½–5¼ times in total length, and
length of head is 4⅓–5 times. Upper profile of head is descending in a straight
line or feeble curve. Snout is as long as
post-ocular part of head. Mouth is very
small, with thick lips. Teeth are notched
or truncate, with 5 or 7 in upper jaw and
6–10 in lower; eye is moderate, with a
diameter 1⅔–2 times interorbital width.
Dorsal fin originates considerably in
advance of the base of ventrals. Anal
fin originates at a nearly equal distance
from the base of the pectoral and the
base of the caudal. Pectoral fin is obtusely
pointed. Caudal fin is densely scaled,
with obtusely pointed lobes. Body is
olive or purplish brown above and white
beneath. It grows to a maximum size of
1 m and 5.3 kg (Boulenger, 1899).
