Habitat: Open water of rivers and lakes.
Description: It is a long-bodied fish
with short head, large scales, long dorsal and anal fins set far back on the
body, and a rounded caudal fin. It has
an elongated and robust body with
a height 3.5–5 times the standard
length (SL). Lips are thick, and there
is a dermal flap on the border of the
gill cover. Adults are gray, brown, or
bronze in color, but juveniles often have
dark longitudinal bands. It grows to a
maximum length of 1 m and weight of
10.2 kg (Froese and Pauly, 2014b).

Common name: Trunkfish, bluntjawed elephantnose.
Distribution: Western Africa; Niger
and Zaire (Mongabay.com, 1994–2013).
Habitat: Murky water with submerged
wood.
Description: It is an elongated, laterally compressed species with a long
elephant-like snout, and the mouth is
located near the end of this proboscis. Lower part of the proboscis protrudes past the mouth. Dorsal and
ventral profiles are symmetric, with
the anal and dorsal fins located across
from one another. Caudal fin is forked.
Coloration of the body is brown-gray
with several brownish white markings.
This species reaches a maximum size of
40 cm (Günther, 1864; Mongabay.com,
1994–2013).
